A careful Directorist setup takes a WordPress site from a blank install to a working business listings platform: structured listing forms, filtered search, maps, owner dashboards and moderation. The plugin makes each step approachable, but the order of decisions matters. Settings that are easy to change on day one, such as field structure and URL slugs, become costly once hundreds of businesses have submitted listings.
This guide follows the sequence we use when configuring Directorist as part of our web design work for UAE clients, from planning fields to the checks we run before launch. It assumes WordPress is installed on suitable hosting and a compatible theme is in place. For projects that need a fully planned listings platform, our WordPress development team handles theme, performance and integration work around the plugin.
Step 1: Plan before you install
Spend an hour on paper first. Directorist will happily let you build forms on the fly, but a planned structure produces cleaner search filters and better category pages.
- Directory types: decide whether you need one type (business listings) or several, such as businesses, events and jobs, each with different fields.
- Fields: list every field, its format (text, number, select, checkbox, date) and whether it will be used as a search filter.
- Categories and locations: draft a two-level category list and a location list by emirate and area.
- Moderation policy: decide whether new listings and edits publish immediately or wait for review.
- Monetization: decide whether listings are free, paid or a mix, since this determines which extensions you need.
Step 2: Install and run the setup wizard
Install Directorist from the WordPress plugin directory and activate it. The setup wizard walks through the basics and can generate the core pages the directory needs, such as listing archives, the add listing form, the user dashboard, login and registration pages. Let it create these pages, then review each one. Rename slugs now if you want cleaner URLs, because changing them after launch means setting redirects.
If you plan to use Google Maps, have an API key ready with the correct APIs enabled and domain restrictions applied. OpenStreetMap is the alternative and needs no key, which suits many directories well.
Step 3: Build the directory type and listing form
The Directory Builder is where the plugin earns its reputation. Each directory type has its own submission form, single listing layout, search form and card design, all configured with drag and drop.
Submission form
Group fields into logical sections: business details, location and contact, hours, media and niche-specific details. Mark only essential fields as required. Every extra required field reduces completed submissions, so ask for the rest after the listing is live.
UAE-specific fields
- A separate WhatsApp number field, so the listing can show a click-to-chat button.
- An Arabic business name field, used in search and on the Arabic version of the site.
- Trade license number, if verification matters in your niche, kept private from the public listing where appropriate.
- Emirate and area as location taxonomy, rather than free text.
Single listing layout
Place contact actions (call, WhatsApp, inquiry form) near the top on mobile. Visitors come to a listing to make contact, and burying the phone number under a gallery costs inquiries.
Step 4: Configure search, filters and maps
Build the search form from the structured fields you planned. A good default for business listings is keyword, category and location in the main bar, with additional filters such as price range, services offered or languages in an expandable panel.
- Enable only filters that have enough data behind them; a filter that returns nothing damages trust.
- Set a sensible default sort, such as newest or relevance, and decide how featured listings are positioned.
- Choose the map provider and default center point, for example Dubai or Abu Dhabi, with a zoom level that shows the relevant area.
- Test radius search against real UAE addresses, since geocoding for some newer communities is sometimes inaccurate. Letting owners drag the map pin fixes most of these cases.
Step 5: Set moderation, users and notifications
In the listing settings, choose whether new submissions are published or held as pending, and whether edits to published listings also need approval. For open directories, holding both for review is the safer default.
- Set listing expiry rules if you plan to run paid, time-limited plans.
- Review the email notifications sent to admins and listing owners, and rewrite the templates in your brand voice, in both languages where needed.
- Configure registration so owners can create accounts and manage listings from the dashboard.
- Add a privacy notice and consent checkbox to registration and inquiry forms, in line with the UAE PDPL (Federal Decree-Law No. 45 of 2021).
- Protect forms with spam prevention such as reCAPTCHA or Cloudflare Turnstile.
Step 6: Add the extensions you actually need
The free plugin covers a complete basic directory. Paid extensions add features such as listing claims, pricing plans, additional payment gateways, business hours and booking. Check the vendor’s current extension list and bundle options, and add only what your launch plan requires.
| Need | What to look for |
|---|---|
| Pre-populated listings that owners take over | Claim listing functionality with verification |
| Paid or featured listings | Pricing plans, plus a payment gateway that accepts AED |
| Opening hours with open now filtering | Business hours support |
| Appointments or reservations | Booking functionality or a dedicated booking integration |
For payments in the UAE, confirm that your chosen gateway supports AED settlement and local cards. Where the gateway you need is not supported directly, routing paid plans through WooCommerce opens up more options.
Step 7: Bilingual checks before your Directorist setup goes live
Translate the plugin interface, field labels, categories and locations with WPML or Polylang, then review every page in Arabic with RTL layout. Pay particular attention to search forms, listing cards and the owner dashboard, which are the areas most likely to show layout issues.
Before launch, run this final check on your Directorist setup:
- Submit a test listing as a new user on a phone, in both languages.
- Run searches with every filter combination on the main categories.
- Check that emails arrive and are not landing in spam.
- Confirm WhatsApp and phone clicks are tracked as conversions in your analytics.
- Measure page speed on listing archives and map views with realistic listing volumes.
Frequently asked questions
Is the free version of Directorist enough to launch?
For a free directory with listings, search, maps and owner submissions, the free version is often enough. You will usually need extensions once you add paid plans, listing claims, extra payment gateways or business hours. Plan your revenue model first, then choose extensions to match, rather than buying bundles you may not use.
Does Directorist work with Arabic and RTL layouts?
Directorist is translation-ready and can be used with multilingual plugins such as WPML or Polylang. RTL display depends partly on your theme, so test forms, cards, filters and the dashboard in Arabic on a staging site. Custom field labels and categories also need translating, not only the plugin interface.
Can I import existing business listings?
Yes. Directorist includes CSV import, which lets you map spreadsheet columns to listing fields. Clean the data first, standardize categories and locations, and test with a small batch before importing everything. Imported listings can be marked as unclaimed so owners can take them over later.
A listings platform that is ready to grow
A structured Directorist setup gives you a directory where owners can manage their own profiles, visitors find relevant businesses quickly and new revenue features can be added without rebuilding. The time spent planning fields, moderation and bilingual behavior before launch pays back every month after it.
